Some obvious and not so obvious bagel flavor options.
The Bagel has been a staple of the New York breakfast scene for multiple generations. While everyone agrees there is nothing better than a hot, fresh bagel coming from straight out of the oven, a debate has raged over the years over what exactly is the best flavor for the delicious, dough-based delicacy? Beyond the basics, plain, sesame and poppy, we’ll offer some obvious and maybe not so obvious options to add to the fray.
For those of us who like to keep it simple, a plain bagel with butter or cream cheese seems to do the trick. However, if you are looking to add a little bit of flavor to your bagel while keeping the integrity of a plain, there is the everything, a combination of sesame and poppy seeds, along with garlic and onion flakes, finished with a sprinkle of salt. While great with butter, cream cheese or eggs, the flavor explosion isn’t for everyone, so if you are looking for something on the sweeter side, then you have the Cinnamon Raisin, Blueberry or French toast bagels. While these flavors certainly make for an awesome breakfast, the sweetness of each allows you to get creative and alternatively serve as a dessert type substitution. Finally, if you are looking for something a little different and adventurous, there is the sun-dried tomato bagel. This variety does not overwhelm you with the flavor of a sundried tomato, but rather lends a small taste of vegetable, offering a great compliment to most deli sandwich combinations.
Of course this just begins to scratch the surface of different bagels, with new flavors being cultivated on a daily basis. What’s your favorite type of bagel? Check back to see what new flavors we will be experimenting with!
